The Method of Archaeological Stratigraphy and the “Harris Matrix”
Abstract
Archaeological stratigraphy is a method used to study and interpret the relationships between stratigraphic units at a site. Although it originated in geology, archaeology required its own approach because it deals with human-made deposits.
A major contribution to the method was made by Edward Cecil Harris, who developed the “Harris Matrix,” a graphical system widely used in modern excavations.
