Damirgaya – Unknown Rock Art site from Southern Georgia

Authors

Abstract

In the concluding section of the report on the archaeological works conducted in 1980–1981 by the Kvemo Kartli Archaeological Expedition, the authors mention several significant sites discovered in the vicinity of Kasumlo village, Marneuli Municipality. Among these are one undisturbed and two leveled settlement mounds associated with the Shomu-Shulaveri culture.

Particular emphasis is placed on a unique monument of prehistoric art identified at the locality of Damirgaya. The site preserves rock paintings executed in dark red ochre. According to the description, the drawings are small in size and highly stylized. Although a large portion of the paintings has been erased or damaged, some figures remain relatively well preserved, depicting images of deer, goats, snakes, and other animals.
